Sonya practises primarily in public and regulatory law.

Before coming to the Bar, Sonya served as Associate to the Hon Justice Edelman AC of the High Court of Australia and to the Hon Justice Perry of the Federal Court of Australia.

Prior to this, Sonya was a Senior Solicitor at the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office where she gained experience across the areas of child protection, coronial inquests, employment law and industrial relations, parole, and high-risk offender schemes. She has also worked in policy as a Senior Legal Officer in the Courts, Tribunals and Commercial Division of the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department.

Sonya holds a Bachelor of Civil Law from the University of Oxford, where she took options in Advanced Property and Trusts, Corporate Insolvency Law, Principles of Civil Procedure, and Principles of Financial Regulation. Her studies were supported by the Ian Wilson-Guy White Magdalen College Oxford Australia Scholarship and a Magdalen College/Faculty of Law BCL Scholarship.

She also holds a Juris Doctor (with Distinction) from the University of New South Wales, from which she graduated first in her class.
